Oskar is a retired Oceanographic engineer who, on travels with the Scripps Institution of Oceanography, had the opportunity to explore many woods offered in parts of the world. He primarily worked and loved making wood furniture. But, on one research trip, he purchased a log of Cocobolo with burls and promptly did not know what to do with it. He did, however, have a very old Shopsmith and by chance, turned it into a lathe. Not knowing anything about woodturning, he went to work; discovered the amazing grains and shapes that all colors of wood have and Immediately fell in love with woodturning. That was 35 years ago and he has been turning ever since.
Over the years, his pieces have been in a half dozen galleries around the US. One of his pieces even was in the White House. His works include nesting bowls to conserve wood, bowls with handles and unusual pieces of both art and function.
Oskar is a regular exhibitor at the Del Mar Fair as well as other venues. He has ribboned 33 years in a row and will not stop. His great loves of wood are primarily Carob, Maple Burls, Olive and only selected tropicals that can be sustainably harvested.
